Home Depot's Illegal Faucets Report of an Investigation into the Illegal and Potentially Dangerouss Faucets Sold by America's Largest Building Supply and Home Improvement Retailer. Updated June 29, 2026

Learn more about Illegal and Black Market Faucets In North America.

Three questions were the focus of our seven-month inquiry into the trafficking of illicit faucet brands at the Home Depot's online marketplace.

  1. How many brands of illegal faucets are offered for sale at the Home Depot,
  2. Who is selling them, and
  3. How successful are Home Depot's efforts to stop the sale of illicit faucets in compliance with its policy prohibiting the sale of illegal goods on its platform?

We were appalled at the result.

Home Depot regularly disregards the laws and regulations that ensure faucets are reliable and safe.

The investigation discovered that:

  1. Nearly 100 faucet brands for sale on the Home Depot online marketplace, comprising thousands of individual faucets and fully two-thirds of the faucet brands offered for sale, violate state and federal laws and regulations. They are illegal to sell and illegal to install in a drinking-water system in the U.S. or Canada.
  2. These faucets have not been tested and certified free of contaminants as required by federal and state or provincial law in both the U.S. and Canada and may contain dangerous substances like metallic lead and pathogens such as Legionella, the bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease.
  3. All but a few of the traffickers in illegal faucets on HomeDepot.com sell faucets that are made in China, a country that has a very relaxed attitude about harmful materials such as metallic lead in water systems. Many Chinese faucets are so contaminated that they are not legal for sale in China and end up at online marketplaces in the U.S. and Canada.
  4. Home Depot claims to have a strict zero-tolerance policy against the sale of illegal goods in its stores or on its website, yet the company does not appear to be taking any meaningful steps to curb trafficking in contraband faucets.

The Company

The Home Depot is North America's largest in-store building products retailer with over 2,300 retail stores across North America.

It far outsells its competition, like Lowe's, Menards, and Sutherlands, with locations in all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam.

The Home Depot online electronic marketplace sells legal faucets, hosting or directly selling brands like

It also sells illegal faucets, lots of illegal faucets, far more illegal than legal brands.

Is this deliberate policy? We hope not, but we simply can't be sure.

Certainly, the very large number of illegal brands being offered for sale at the company's online marketplace suggests that it is not just a matter of a few rogue sellers slipping through the cracks of a strict vetting system.

Illegal faucet brands outnumber legal brands almost 2 to 1 on Home Depot's online marketplace – far more than can be accounted for by anything other than either intention or inattention.

Home Depot leads customers to believe that the products it sells are, at the very least, safe. They may not be the absolute best. They may not live up to the hype on the website. The seller's guarantee may be next to wworthless But, if nothing else, they are safe.

Illegal faucets are not safe, or, more accurately, they have not been proven safe.

Some brands may be safe, some not. We don't know which is which because they have not been through the certificatoin process that proves them safe.

It is, in part, the very lack of certification that makes them illegal. The law everywhere in North America prohibits the sale or use of uncertified faucets.

The CPSC Faucet Recall

Even if the Home Depot had somehow managed to be unaware of the problems with contraband faucets in the past, it should have been alerted by the massive recall of illegal faucets by the the Consumer Product Safety Commission in 2025.

The CPSC identified over 10,000 faucets, sold at online marketplace sites, that contained dangerous amounts of metallic lead, industrial solvents, dangerous germs, and other hazardous substances.

The recall was widely reported across the internet and by major news sources, CBS and NBC. A later statement from Consumer Reports echoed the warning. [1]

The CPSC action primarily targeted off-brand Chinese-made faucets sold predominantly on third-party platforms like Amazon. Because these specific recalled brands, such as Kicimpro, Vfauosit, and Basdehen, were never part of Home Depot's inventory, the retailer did not need to issue a direct product recall itself.

Being duly alerted to the problem, however, Home Depot should have taken the steps necessary to ensure that its online marketplace was not haboring sellers of illegal faucets.

As far as we can tell, it did nothing.

The company claimed it did something. It claimed to have …

"… accelerating third-party lab testing and enforcing stricter certifications for all off-brand and imported bath and kitchen fixtures on their shelves and online."

Maybe it did. But, if it did, we found no evidence of it, and it certainly was not at all effective.

We know it was not effective bacause almost nothing has changed.

The illegal faucets for sale on the Home Depot marketplace on the date of this report, many months after the recall, are largely the same contraband faucets sold on the site before the CPSC report—nearly 100 faucet brands selling thousands of banned faucets.

What is a Faucet and What Makes It Legal?

Not just anything with a showy finish and convenient handle that delivers water into a sink is a faucet, as the laws of the land define faucets in North America.

Faucets are a part of your drinking water system and every part of that system, from water treatment plant to the faucet above yhour sink, right down to the solder joints joining the pipes in your house, is strictly regulated.

To be legal to install in that system, a faucet must meet rigorous and exacting standards.

There are no exceptions.

Faucets attached to private wells must comply with the same strict requirements as those fed from a public water system.

A faucet that cannot prove that it meets these standards is legally not a faucet and cannot be legally sold as a faucet.

If it is being advertised and sold as a faucet, then something shady is afoot. The usual term for such activity is fraud.

And not just a little fraud.

Selling thousands of unapproved faucets is fraud on a vast scale, committed daily on Home Depot's online marketplace. Its unwitting victims are the company's customers.

Illegal To "Distribute in Commerce" in the U.S.

The importation, sale, delivery, or other "distribution in commerce" of a faucet in the U.S. is prohibited by federal law unless it complies with every one of these federal laws and regulations:

Quick Guide to U.S. Plumbing Codes
All plumbing codes in effect in the U.S. and Canada require faucets to be tested and certified to comply with the joint U.S./Canadian basic faucet, ASME A112.18.1 / CSA B125.1, with the water safety standards of ANSI / NSF 61 and with with the lead-free standards for drinking water, ANSI / NSF 372. (NSF 61 and NSF 372 are jointly abbreviated "ANSI/NSF 61/9" or "61 Section 9") Faucets that do not meet these standards cannot be lawfully installed in a home water system anywhere in North America.

Illegal to Import, Sell, or Deliver in Canada

A faucet may not be legally sold in Canada if …

There is no single federal law in Canada mandating faucet standards for all situations. Instead, legal requirements are governed by a combination of provincial building and plumbing codes, federal energy efficiency eegulations, and Health Canada safety guidelines.

Illegal to Install in a Drinking Water System

A faucet that hasn't been certified by an independent, accredited laboratory as meeting all U.S./Canadian standards cannot be legally installed in a household water system (including a private well system) in the United States or Canada.

These standards are:

A faucet that passes all of the many tests required by the standards is listed as certified in a public database available for all to see and is legal to install in a household water system.

Independent Certification

The law does not permit a faucet company to test and certify its own faucets. They must be tested and certified by an accredited independent laboratory.

The tests are rigorous—some of the toughest in the world.

As an example of how tough, consider the following:

Metallic Lead, Deadly Pathogens, and Other Dangers

In the U.S. and Canada, we have gotten accustomed to clean, fresh water available at the twist of a handle.

But safe water conveniently flowing right into your kitchen or bath is just over 100 years old, and is even today, not a given. A lot of work and money goes into keeping it that way.

Rigorous testing ensures that all parts of the system conform to strict standards.

Faucets are an integral part of that system.

Testing for Contaminants

The test for the presence of harmful substances starts with filling a faucet with water specially formulated to extract contaminants.

After 19 days, the water is removed and tested for the presence of toxins, contaminants, and harmful organisms in concentrations greater than safe limits.

If any are found, the faucet fails and is not certified for use in North America.

Metallic Lead

The most worrisome of these contaminants is metallic lead.

Brass, the material from which most faucets are made, is an alloy that normally includes lead, and lead is a big problem even in small amounts.

It has been identified by both the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) as a neurotoxin that is very hazardous to health.

Neurotoxins specifically target and destroy the nervous system, disrupting critical communication between neurons. Children younger than six years are especially vulnerable to the effects, which can severely affect mental and physical development.

In the past, brass could include up to 8% lead and still be used in faucet construction. But that ended in 2014 with an amendment to the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Today's brass faucets must, by law, be made of an alloy that contains 0.25% lead, no more than a trace [6].

Lead is a special concern with faucets made in China.

Lead is a special concern with faucets made in China.
Leaded brass is commonly used in Chinese manufacturing, and there are no regulations banning or limiting lead in faucets. (See the sidebar Lead in Chinese Faucets.)
These faucets are commonly exported to North America and sold as uncertified brands.

To ensure that a faucet is free of lead, it must pass two very stringent tests.

Most health professionals would like no lead whatsoever. But trace amounts of lead are so widely distributed in the environment that zero lead would be an impossible standard. The current standards what is achievable with today's technology.

Other Contaminants

Metallic lead is not the only contaminant that is of concern. During the certification process, faucets are screened for the presence of other hrmful substances.

Metals:
Metals other than lead may also cause health problems. The most concerning include …
Arsenic Drinking contaminated water causes most cases of arsenic poisoning. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Long-term exposure can cause skin changes such as darkening and lesions. Arsenic poisoning can cause serious complications and even death if not treated immediately.
Mercury Mercury is, like lead, a neurotoxin that can damage your brain and central nervous system. Long-term exposure can lead to death if not identified and treated.
Cadmium Long-term exposure to cadmium leads to cancer and organ system toxicity such as skeletal, urinary, reproductive, cardiovascular, central and peripheral nervous, and respiratory systems. The disease is treated with chelating agents that help the body remove the metal through urination over time.
Heavy metal poisoning is insidious. Once ingested, these substances stay in the body and accumulate slowly over years. By the time symptoms appear, the toxicity level is already very high. Accurate diagnosis is difficult because symptoms are not very specific. Fatigue, neurological impairment, anemia, and tremors, could point to a raft pf other ailments like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's,early stage kidney disease, or depression.
Treatment is available once the diagnosis is secure.
The usual approch invoves chelation infusions adminished intravenously, initially several times a week. The celating medication binds with the toxic metals in the bloodstream and form a stable compound that travels through the kidneys and is flushed out of the body through urination.
However, because the chelating agents are non-selective, they can also bind with and deplete your body of essential minerals like calcium and zinc. Side effects can include kidney damage, low blood calcium, and dangerous drops in blood pressure.
Pathogens:
Dangerous germs can thrive inside poorly designed faucets, colonizing the moist, nutrient-rich biofilm (slime) that can build up in aerators and internal waterways. When the water runs, faucets can produce microbe-carrying bioaerosols that are breathed in or transferred to hands or food, and ingested.
Cryptosporidium parvum A microscopic parasite that causes cryptosporidiosis, a gastrointestinal illness. The most common source of the microbe is contaminated food and water.
Legionella A bacterium that causes Legionnaires' disease and Pontiac fever, lower. respiratory illnesses with pneumonia-like symptoms.
Naegleria fowleri An amoeba that destroys brain tissue. There is no effective treatment. It is nearly always fatal.
Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) A bacterium that survives well in tap water. It can cause lung disease especially in the elderly and other vulnerable individuals.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa A common opportunistic bacterium often found in biofilms. It is a major cause of wound infections and can cause pneumonia
Vibrio This genus of bacteria thrives in stagnant water. It is usually killed of at the water treatment plant, but can accumulate in biofilms inside poorly designed faucets. It causes Cholera and its less lethal cousin, Vibriosis. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills. Cholera can lead to rapid, life-threatening dehydration, low blood pressure, and shock. Before modern sanitation systems, cholera was a constant threat to public health. The last major outbreak in the U.S. was in 1910.
Non-Persistent Contaminants:
Other dangerous substances found in faucets result from contamination during manufacturing process, a special problem in China. In Consumer Product Safety Cpmmission testing of Chinese-made contraband faucets in 2025, the tests uncovered the presence of …
NDMA (N-nitrosodimethylamine) A volatile organic compound used to make rocket fuel. It is known to be a highly toxic, potent carcinogen. Its presence in Chinese-made faucets suggest that, somewhere in China, rocket fuel is being formulated very near a faucet factory.
NDEA (N-nitrosodiethylamine) A potent organic compound known to be a significant carcinogen. Also causes kidney and liver damage.
Permethrin A synthetic neurotoxin used to kill head lice and the mites that cause scaabies. It works by paralyzing their nervous systems of these pests but is also highly toxic to cats and aquatic life. Something you definitely do not want in your household water.
Pfiesteria Pfiesteria toxin causes PEAS, a syndrome characterized by cognitive impairment, respiratory issues, memory loss, confusion, severe headaches, skin sores and burning sensations, eye irritation, muscle cramps, and gastrointestinal distress.
TCP (1,2,3-trichloropropane) A synthetic, colorless, chlorinated hydrocarbon liquid used as an industrial solvent, degreaser, and soil fumigant. It is classified as "likely to be carcinogenic to humans".
Had these faucets been certified by a responsible seller, all of these contaminants would have been discovered before any faucet was offered for sale to the public.
"Never buy a faucet you've never heard of."
"Unknown brands have often justly earned their obscurity."

Safe, Durable Faucets

How successful are the safeguards provided by certification?

Very.

Safety

The drinking water flowing from a certified faucet is safe— as safe and often safer than the bottled water you buy at the grocery.

An investigation by Consumer Reports in 2020 found several brands of bottled water with "forever chemicals" (PFAS) and arsenic way above safe levels.

A four-year review by the Natural Resources Defense Council comparing bottled vs. tap water concluded that 22% of bottled water brands "contained chemicals at levels above state health limits" that "if consumed over a long period of time, some of those contaminants could cause cancer or other health problems."

The Basic Faucet Buying Rule

The basic buying rule for faucets is simple: never, ever buy a faucet unless it is certified and the seller can prove it is certified.

Established and well-known faucet brands like are safe bets.

But if the faucet is a brand you have never heard of, demand the listing certificates from the seller. If the certificates are not forthcoming or you are not sure they are valid, don't buy the faucet.

We can help you identify safe faucets.

Go to our Index to Faucet Reviews to find the 300 most-sold brands in North America.

Our review will reveal whether the brand is certified and score its quality and reliability, the level of warranty protection, and whether it is an overall good value.

If it has not been reviewed, most likely it is a contraband faucet, but to be certain, send the brand name to us by email at starcraftreviews@yahoo.com.

We will check it out and respond within one business day. There is no charge for this service.

Durability

Certified faucets are also incredibly durable.

If you have ever wondered why faucets seem to last forever, the answer is certification.

Certified faucets are beastly tough, unlikely to ever fail in a lifetime of use.

Fewer than 2% develop a problem resulting from a design, manufacturing, or material defect, and if they do fail, they are simple to fix. [7]

In our day job of remodeling vintage kitchens and bathrooms, we encounter faucets that are well into their second century and still going strong.

Faucets are usually replaced, not because they fail, but because tastes change and they simply go out of style.

Newer, often more convenient, designs and novel finishes make that old faucet seem old indeed. But it's not old at all, not for a faucet, that is.

And, odds are, it still works.

Leaking is now very rare due to improved valve technology that no longer relies on rubber rings and washers to control water flow.

With the near-universal adoption of almost indestructible ceramic disc valves, the dreaded midnight drip, drip, drip is largely a thing of the past.

It is becoming even less common with the introduction of super cartridges by that include ceramic discs treated to prevent the mineral buildup—accumulated minerals from "hard" water are the usual culprit if a ceramic valve leaks.

To learn more about how consumers are protected by faucet regulation at all levels of government, go to Faucet Basics, Part 3: Keeping Faucets Safe & Reliable.

Listing Certificates

A faucet that passes all required tests and meets all North American standards is listed in a certificate issued by the testing authority called, simply enough, a "Certificate of Listing" or, even more simply, a listing certificate.

Home Depot assures its customers that it will not allow the sale of harmful or illegal products, and buyers rely on that promise.
Yet, in less than four hours, without trying very hard, our researcher, working alone, found hundreds of faucets for sale at the Home Depot's online marketplace that are banned by federal and state laws.

The certificate must be issued before the faucet is placed on the market, then reissued annually thereafter for as long as it remains for sale.

In addition to the annual retesting, the testing authority will periodically take faucets from the seller's inventory, and sometimes right off the production line, for random testing.

A legal faucet must be identified in a listing certificate by brand name and model name or number under which it is being sold. If it is not listed or the listing does not show that brand name and model under, it is not certified.

It is not unusual for a faucet trafficker to produce what appears to be a valid listing certificate and point to a faucet with a different brand or model name and insist that it is the same fauct. It is not the same fauce, nd, no matter how long or loudly the seller insists that it is, it isn't. (Learn how to recognize a valid listing certificate.)

These certificates are public documents, posted on the web.

Many traffickers of contraband faucets claim compliance with some or all North American faucet standards but sell faucets for which required certificates have not been issued.

We know because we checked, and if we did not find a certificate online, we asked the compay for copies of its certificates. Not surprisingly, companies are rarely able to produce valid certificatess.

Certificates are the only acceptable proof that a faucet is certified.

No one, not even the most experienced professional, can tell by looking at a faucet (or a picture of a faucet on a website) whether it is free of lead and other contaminants, that its valve is good for at least 500,000 on/off cycles, or that its finish won't peel or turn a funny color in ordinary use.

(1) The listing certificate meets the requirement that the flow rate and lead content be confirmed through independent testing by an accredited laboratory.
(2) Certificates must identify the faucet by the brand and model name or number under which it is being sold.

Testing and certification is the only way to be sure that faucets are safe and reliable.

Home Depot's Enforcement

Home Depot's marketplace policies strictly prohibit third-party sellers from listing illegal, and unsafe products.

Yet, in less than four hours, using tools available on the internet and without trying very hard, our researcher found nearly 400 faucets for sale at the Home Depot that are banned by federal and/or state laws.

If a retired elderly gentleman can easily find 400 illegal faucets in four hours, imagine what the hoard of Home Depot regulators could find if they only bothered to look.

We estimate that over 1,500 contraband faucets are for sale on the website. That's over 1,500 too many.

There is no reason for the company's failure to eliminate banned faucets from its marketplace. They are simple to unmask.

All of the information needed is online, and it usually takes us five minutes or less at the keyboard to determine whether a faucet brand is legal for sale and installation in the U.S. or Canada, using web resources readily available to anyone who checks.

It may be even far easier for Home Depot.

Every legal faucet comes with documentation that proves compliance with federal and state laws.

These are documents that sellers of lawful faucets can easily produce for each faucet sold. The Home Depot can require them to be produced as a condition of listing a faucet on its marketplace.

If a third-party seller cannot provide the required documentation, then its faucets are illegal no matter how long or how loudly it disclaims to the contrary, so they are not permitted to be listed.

It could hardly be simpler.

After-Sale Service and Support

Home Depot allows no-questions-asked returns for most products for up to 90 days (although restocking fees may apply).

After that grace period, however, it does not provide after-sales support for third-party products, and the chance that a faucet trafficker can or will support its illegal faucets with an effective warranty or replacement parts is virtually nil.

Finding and getting in touch with a trafficker in illegal faucets, most of whom do not want to be found, can be a process requiring some serious work if it is possible at all.

Finding the Seller

Traditionally, online marketplace sites have vigorously resisted providing any contact information about their third-party sellers, legal or illegal, out of concern that such information might encourage customers to bypass the marketplace and deal directly with the seller for lower prices and better terms—not good for Home Depot's business.

That changed in 2023.

The U.S. INFORM Consumers Act (15 U.S.C. § 45f), sponsored by Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), signed into law on December 29, 2022 by President Biden and effective as of June 27, 2023, requires online marketplaces hosting third-party sellers to "collect, verify, and disclose" contact information about most third-party sellers. [8]

The information, including the legal name of the seller, a working email address, and a valid telephone number, must be provided to customers. It is essentially a U.S. version of the Consumer Rights Directive adopted in 2011 by the European Union.

The marketplace operator has two choices for disclosing the information. It can add it to a product's listing on the website, or it can provide the seller's verified information as part of a sales confirmation. It also must provide the information to potential buyers, if asked.

Of course, this only works if the hosting company actually complies with the law, and Home Depot does not.

Despite having had years to implement the new requirements, Home Depot, as far as we can tell, has done little or nothing.

Fictitious Business Names

It is perfectly legal to use a trade name or what the law calls a "fictitious" business name. ("StarCraft Reviews" is a fictitious name. Its legal name is StarCraft Media LLC.) But there are rules a business must follow.

If located in the U.S. or Canada, a business usually must register the fictitious name with some government agency.

In the U.S., this is commonly the Secretary of State of the state or territory in which the business is located. In Canada, registration is with the Business Registry of a province (although what the registry is called varies by province).

Chinese companies also have to register fictitious names, but only if they do business in China under the name. If the fictitious name is used exclusively outside of China, registration is not required.

Conducting business under an unregistered name can be a infraction that may result in fines, but in some states (e.g., Virginia, Missouri), it is a misdemeanor that could result in jail time. In Canada, it is fraud under the Criminal Code to use a fictitious name to deceive others or gain benefits.

It does not post the required information on its website, and it does not include the information in sales confirmations. If asked, customer service agents have no information about the seller to share. They do their best, but since Home Depot does not supply them with the needed information, their best is not very good.

As a result, a customer has no practical way to to confirm the seller's bona fides. A potential buyer has to rely on the assumption that a vendor at the Home Depot's website is legitimate and selling a legal product.

When it comes to faucets, however, that assumption is misplaced.

The Name Game

Many traffickers sell under a fictitious name until their poor reputations are such that sales drop off or they violate one of Home Depot's rules and are booted off the site.
They then adopt a new fictitious name and reappear at the Home Depot within a few months. using a different address.
None of the internet marketplace sites has figured out how to deal with this practice.
The solution, of course, is to ban all illegal faucets. Then it makes no difference what name sellers of contraband faucets use.

Even our researchers, with all of the resources available to them, were unable to find out basic information about every trafficer (which is why you will see some listings in the table below with Unknown or None found instead of specific information about the trafficker).

Seller Warranties

Traffickers rarely offer a warranty of any kind on the faucets they sell. The few that do so provide a very short-term warranty, usually a year or less. Some are content with a 30-day guarantee.

If they do offer a warranty, it is seldom an effective warranty beacause they rarely provide the contact information need to make a warranty claim. A warrnty on which a claim cannot be made is, for practical purposes, no warranty at all.

Nor have ever seen a single one of these "warranties" that complies with the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. §2308).

This law specifies the form and content required of a legal consumer product warranty in the United States. A warranty that does not comply with the Act is not a legal warranty.

A document explaining the terms of the warranty in "simple and readily understood language" is a bedrock requirement of federal warranty law. Even traffickers with a "warranty" seldom comply with that rule.

A warranty that does not comply with the Act is not a legal warranty.

Replacement Parts

An astounding number of the calls we get from readers are requests for information about where to get parts. Our answer, for most trafficked brands, is that there are no parts to get.

Sellers of major faucet brands in the U.S. and Canada like have deep and extensive replacement parts systems.

Many can provide repair parts for faucets not manufactured for half a century or even longer.

But if you buy an illegal faucet at the Home Depot, any customer service from the seller is unlikely, and there is little chance of replacement parts even for faucets still in production.

A replacement parts system requires a stock of parts, even for discontinued faucets, an inventory system for storing and tracking the parts, and a means of delivering the parts quickly to minimize the time during which a faucet is out of service.

The invesstment required is substantial and no trafficker that we know of has the financial resources to make the needed investment even if it had the inclination to do so.

Some faucet traffickers are manufacturers, but even these sellers are not set up to provide parts, especially for faucets they no longer make.

Most traffickers, however, are not manufacturers. They are trading companies, furniture stores, beauty salons or farm cooperatives. The likelihood of these sellers stocking replacement parts is very remote indeed.

So, if your contraband Home Depot faucet breaks, and there is a very good chance that it will, plan on buying a new faucet. In all likelihood, there will be no parts available to fix the old one.

The Faucet Traffickers

We identified nearly 100 different illegal faucet traffickers selling at the Home Depot marketplace as of the date of this report.

Most sell Chinese products. A few sell faucets made in Taiwan or Vietnam, and one sells faucets made in Mexico.

Unlike Amazon or Walmart where most traffickers re home-based in China, Home Depot's traffickers are overwhelmingly domestic, located in the U.S. or Canada, although some are local subsidiaries of Chinese companies.

Trading Companies

Trading companies are by far the largest group of traffickers.

These are sellers specializing in electronic commerce on the internet. Many are multi-national, selling in Europe, the Middle East, and South America was well as in Canada dnd the U.S.

They usually sell general merchandise that may include one, two, or a few faucets along with a raft of other goods such as fish tanks, picture frames, tambourines, mosquito nets, electronics, musical instruments, and shoes.

They come, and they go, selling faucets until they run out of faucets to sell, then returning to faucet selling when they get a fresh supply.

Some are a dumping ground for manufacturers seeking to rid themselves of remaining stocks of discontinued faucets, models that haven't sold, or faucets so poorly made that they are illegal in their home market.

Sanitaryware Manufacturers

Sanitaryware and hardware manufacturers are another large group, many of which have no other pathway into the North American market.

The traditional route is through distributors or retailers that buy faucets in bulk. Home Depot is one of those retailers. Its store brand faucets are imported in bulk quantities from overseas suppliers.

Generally, these buyers insist on good quality and certification to North American standards, if only to avoid unwelcome scrutiny by regulators and a deluge of warranty claims and possible lawsuits.

Most overseas manufacturers of certified faucets have exported to North America for years if not decades, making faucets for companies like

But only about three dozen companies make these legal faucets.

For companies whose faucets would not pass North American testing due either to high lead content, low quality, or both, Home Depot provides a wide-open, largely unguarded highway directly into the pocketbooks of unsuspecting consumers, bypassing the safeguards that North American-based distributors provide.

Other Traffickers

Trafficking in illegal faucets on marketplace websites in the U.S. seems to have become a cottage industry, primarily in China, but U.S. sellers have joined in.

Among the many traffickers we identified are furniture stores, an automobile parts supplier, a biotechnology company, a farming cooperative, a tax and financial service and a beauty salon – all somewhat less than highly qualified, professional faucet retailers.

List of Known Traffickers

Our list of known trafficked brands is comprehensive and regularly updated, but we cannot guarantee it is complete. or totally accurate.

Since Home Depot does not provide the actual legal name of its sellers, their address, or contact information, we had to search the web, government agencies, and our industry contacts to ferret out the sometimes incomplete information about the company's traffickers. As we find out more, we will update the listings.

We probably missed a few, and traffickers come and go. By the time you read this report, some will have dropped out, and new sellers will have appeared along with new brand names.

As we find more, or the Home Depot adds more traffickers, we will include them in the list.

We Can Use Your Help

We may have also misidentified sellers of perfectly legal faucets as traffickers. If so, we hope the offended parties will contact us right away with the correct information and accept our sincere apologies. S STRICTLY KITCHEN + BATH

Bannoura Sinks Corp. selling at the Home Depot as S STRICTLY KITCHEN + BATH: 31575 Glendale Ave., Livonia, MI 48150.

Principals: The company employes several family members, including Andrew Bannoura, Matthew Bannoura, and Jonathan Bannoura.

Website: https://strictlysinks.store

Contact Information: strictlysinks@gmail.com, 888-517-1118.

Trademark: "S STRICTLY KITCHEN + BATH" is registered as a graphic (Logo) trademark[9] for faucets and other sanitary wares by the seller.

Warranty: S STRICTLY KITCHEN + BATH faucets have a lifetime limited warranty with some limitations. The duration of the lifetime warranty is not clearly identified, but evidently it is for the actual lifetime of the original owner.

The warranty does not fully comply with U.S. consumer warranty law. Here is the offending language:
"No additional warranties, express or implied are given, including but not limited to, any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose (emphasis supplied)."
Federal warranty law prohibits a company offering written warranty from excluding (lawyers say "disclaiming") state law warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. 15 U.S.C. § 2308(a) So, this attempted disclaimer is simply void as a matter of law.
Its very presence in the warranty, however, is deceptive. It could, and appears intended to, deceive a reasonable person into falsely believeing that a faucet was not covered by state law warranties. That is the very definition of deception.
Federal warranty law, however, forbids decption, requiring consumer warranties to be written using …
"… words or phrases which would not mislead a reasonable, average consumer as to the nature or scope of the warranty." (15 U.S.C. § 2302 (a) (13))
Deception does not need to be deliberate to be actionable. It is sufficient that Bannoura Sinks failed to take "reasonable care" to …
"… to make the warranty not misleading." (15 U.S.C. § 2310(c)(2))

Manufacturer: Lanerdi Sanitaryware Ltd., No.23, Yexing 1st Rd., Xinhui, Jiangmen, Guangdong 529100 China.

Certifications: Just under half of the company's faucets have been certified for use in a drinking water system. However:
• None have been registered with the Department of Energy and, in consequence, are not legal for sale in the U.S. (You can still legally buy them, however – a little quirk in thae law. The company faces a penalty of $575.00 per day for each unregistered faucet offers for sale, compounded daily. That's the company's problem, however, not yours.)
• None are approved for sale in California or Massachusetts, and bathroom basin faucets are prohibited in Colorador for lack of a WaterSense®-listing.
Here are the company's certified faucets. These faucets are legal for installation in a drinking water system except as noted above:

Table Notes
†  Listed Seller is based on information supplied by the seller to Home Depot. It may not be the legal name of the seller. We have no means to easily verify and have not verified that the listed name is the seller's true legal name.
Errors and Omissions
If you find any errors in this table, you know of a faucet brand sold at the Home Depot that should be included, a faucet listed here that should not be included, or you have had experience, good, bad, or indifferent, with any faucet listed here, please let us know at starcraftreviews@yahoo.com or post a comment below. We appreciate your help.
  1. CPSC Warns Consumers to Immediately Stop Using Certain Chinese-Made Faucets Sold on Amazon.com Due to Dangerous Lead Exposure for Infants, Young Children and Pregnant Women.
  2. The term "manufacturer" means "any person who manufactures, produces, assembles, or imports" a faucet. (16 CFR § 305.2). The marking does not neet to be the manufacturer's name. It may be a brand name or trademark.
  3. ANSI/NSF 372 and ANSI/NSF 61 are often combined and referred to as ANSI/NSF 61/9.
  4. If ceramic valve cartridges are designed to last 70 years or longer in ordinary use, why did my valve fail after 5, 10, or 20 years?

The answer is mineral buildup. Faucets are tested in mineral-free water. Unless you have a water softener installed, your household water is probably mineral-rich. Only 15% of the U.S. has naturally occurring soft water.

Ceramic valves control water with two ceramic discs that are polished to the point where, when closed, the space between them is smaller than a water molecule. The flow of water is blocked. When minerals accumulate on the polished surface, that gap can widen, allowing water to leak past.

What distinguishes super-valve discs from others is their resistance to mineral accumulation.

At present, two approaches are used to combat mineral buildup. Diamond Seal Technology valve cartridges used in faucets from Masco, are coated with diamond dust that constantly grinds away any minerals that adhere to the discs. The German company, uses a simpler approach. Its PVD+ cartridges are coated with diamond-like carbon. This material not only makes the discs super hard but also makes them super slick, preventing minerals from sticking.

For more in-depth information about faucet valves and cartridges, read Faucet Basics: Part 2: Faucet Valves & Cartridges.

  5. Water systems and well pumps deliver water at a normal pressure between 40 and 80 psi (pounds per square inch). Water pressure below 40 psi is considered low, and water pressure above 80 psi is too high. A water pressure lower or higher than this range violates most plumbing codes. The average water pressure in the U.S. and Canada is 60 psi.
A surge in pressure occurs when a faucet is shut off suddenly. Water flowing behind the faucet comes to an abrupt halt, but in doing so momentarily surges to a pressure of 200 psi or even higher, but usually nowhere near the 600 psi at which faucet valves are burst tested.
  6. A faucet may contain no more than a "weighted average" of 0.25% lead in the waterway of the faucet. Some parts may cotain more, some less, but when averaged out, the total cannot be more that 0.25% (1/4 of 1%). If it is more, the faucet fails and is not certified.
  7. Most faucet failures are caused by improper installation and a lack of routine maintenance. Faucets that contain rubber washers or O-rings need the washers and rings replaced periodically to avoid leaking. Faucets of this type are increasingly rare, limited to some economy faucets and faucets purchased before 1985.
In most modern faucets, the water control device is a self-contained ceramic cartridge. These need no regular maintenance. If they fail (a very uncommon occurrence), they cannot be repaired and must be replaced.
  8. The INFORMConssumers Act requires Home Depot to collect and to provide to its customers the following information (15 U.S. Code § 45f(B))
(i)[T]he identity of the high-volume third party seller, including –
    (I) the full name of the seller, which may include the seller name or seller's company name, or the name by which the seller or company operates on the online marketplace;
(II) the physical address of the seller; and
(III) contact information for the seller, to allow for the direct, unhindered communication with third party sellers by users of the online marketplace, including
    (aa) a current working phone number;
(bb) a current working email address; or
(cc) other means of direct electronic messaging (which may be provided to such seller by the online marketplace), provided that the requirements of this item shall not prevent an online marketplace from monitoring communications between high-volume third party sellers and users of the online marketplace for fraud, abuse, or spam.
  9. Trademarks are of two types, a word or character mark and a design or graphic mark.
A word mark protects a brand's name, words, or letters in plain text, regardless of font, size, or color.
A design mark (also graphic or figurative mark) protects a brand logo, symbol, or design that may include stylized words, graphics, and color.
Registered word marks offer broader, more flexible protection for the brand name itself, while a registered design mark protects a specific visual appearance but may not, and usually do not, protect the brand name when used apart from the design.
For full protection, registration of a logo or other graphic design should be accompanied by a separate registration of the brand name as a word or character mark.
